The style code that runs through our national fibre is not elitist or expensive. It’s the love of colour, pattern and print, irrespective of cultural background, embracing all occasions. We love the glint of gold in songket, the rambling, meandering storytelling of batik—the immortalisation of our flora, fauna and fables in textile form. It’s a storytelling form we associate most dearly with the many, many forms and shapes of batik that we find up and down and all through Malaysia (and Indonesia), and while many designers have taken on the artform and recast it in new, contemporary ways, batik is still most often seen as a traditional textile, rather than a modern one.
